Abstract:

For the development and design of facilities for the production of continuity in water bodies, it is important to consider the behavior of fish in terms of hydraulic structures. The investigation before the construction of fish-relevant protection and continuity structures outside the already published state of the art is specifically regulated in North Rhine-Westphalia to the effect that investigations of a high functionality of the system must be proven in advance. The method of choice here are, in addition to the pure engineering methods (such as numerical or physical flow modeling) ethohydraulic studies, which investigate the behavior of aquatic organisms in relation to hydraulic structures.

So far, the approach to data acquisition and the later statistical evaluation of ethohydraulic countable events has not followed a generally accepted, standardized approach, which is currently demanded from various quarters as a future-oriented methodology.

Within the framework of the present work different fundamentals and findings from own projects and literature are put together in a so-called process catalog, which are to serve the quality assurance during the planning and execution of ethohydraulic tests (object of research I). In addition to a standardized assessment of stimulus-induced fish reactions, the application of the catalog contents allows an evaluation of ethohydraulically countable events by means of closing statistics, which ensures high resilience of the results.

In addition, a general sampling plan will be developed, which will allow to determine the number of actually experimental animals needed before starting the ethohydraulic tests (object of research II). The number of animals identified in the sampling plan ensures that the number of tested animals is sufficient to prove existing significant effects with high certainty. Conversely, a sample size that is too small can be excluded as the cause, so that a time- and cost-intensive trial repetition with larger samples is unnecessary. Thus, in view of ethical and economic considerations, it is taken into account that as few animals as possible but as many as necessary for statistically meaningful re-sults are used for the examinations.

The product of this work is a process catalog for ethohydraulic investigations, which bundles the developed principles and findings and makes them available as a digital version. The addressed user group includes performers of ethohydraulic tests. The digital application contains guidelines and useful information, which should be considered as the basis for a standardized procedure during the ethohydraulic tests and the subsequent data analysis as well as a general computational module for sample planning.
