Fremdsprachenlernen in/und Europa – Eine europäisch-fremdsprachendidaktische Kritik an Philippe Van Parijs’ Linguistic Justice

In diesem Beitrag werden die Hauptthesen des Buches Linguistic Justice von Philippe Van Parijs einerseits hinsichtlich einer europäischen Identität und andererseits in Hinblick auf das Fremdsprachenlernen in Europa diskutiert. Es wird argumentiert, dass die Forderung nach einer dominanten Durchsetzung des Englischen als lingua franca nicht mit dem Erhalt und der Pflege der sprachlich-kulturellen Vielfalt in Einklang gebracht werden kann. Dahingegen wird gerade das Fremdsprachenlernen über das Englische hinaus als originär europäisches Identifikationsmoment bestimmt.

The article presents the main theses of Linguistic Justice from the Belgian philosopher and economist Philippe Van Parijs. The critique on Philippe Van Parijs’s position is centered on European identity and the learning of foreign languages. From the point of view of this article the idea of English as a European lingua franca is in contradiction with the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe. In addition to English as a foreign language, from a European perspective learning other languages than English can be considered as a constitutive moment of European identification.
