Moving Experience: Urban Mobility Hubs On The Way to Wellbeing

Abstract

The presentation opens with a working definition of fundamental concepts of place vs. space; spiritual wellbeing as belonging and socio-spatial connection and the roles they play in the cause and solution of the challenges of migration across the global, regional and local scale to address the UN’s Agenda for Sustainable Development. An anthropological critique of historical movement patterns, space and wellbeing is used both as a problem definition and means for exposing the latent potential of Mobility Hubs as transformative, empathic places that inspire economic vibrancy and pro-social action.

Through a series of case studies viewers will learn about human-centered design practices and development strategies for constructing Mobility Hubs as places for cultural exchange and wellbeing. Linkages between phenomenology, neuroscience, and architecture are used to propose strategies for unifying place, purpose and experience to build accessible, sustainable Mobility Hubs. Theory and measures from these diverse fields are synthesized to provide a design framework for accessible hubs that move us physically and spiritually toward harmonious, sustainable development that celebrates human diversity.

Speaker’s Bio

Hansel Bauman is founding partner of Hansel Bauman, Architect + Planner with over twenty-five years of experience in architecture, planning, placemaking, research, and policy development. He currently serves as the Gallaudet University campus architect, Co-Director DeafSpace Institute (DSI) and adjunct faculty. He is a recognized leader in the field of “DeafSpace Architecture”. He received the International Association of Universal Design’s Gold Award in 2015 for the “DeafSpace Design Guide” developed through the research and design program he established in 2006 with Gallaudet’s Department of ASL and Deaf Studies. Bauman has written and lectured extensively on architecture and the senses.
