How Vague Are International Agreements? Introducing a Method for Systematic Comparison

This dissertation aims to develop a systematic method for the comparison of vagueness in international agreements. To this end, it first illustrates why such a tool is needed by drawing on arguments made in the fields of International Relations and International Law. The method itself is developed building on the results of a survey conducted among experts in international law. After an in-depth description of the measuring tool and its conception, the method is then applied to the UNFCCC and NPT regimes.

In dieser Dissertation wird eine Methode zur quantitativen Messung von Vagheitsindikatoren in internationalen Abkommen entwickelt. Argumente aus den Bereichen Internationale Beziehungen und Völkerrecht belegen, warum ein solcher Vergleich notwendig ist. Die Methode selbst basiert auf den Ergebnissen einer Umfrage unter Experten des Völkerrechts. Nach einer eingehenden Beschreibung der Methodik wird die Methode auf die UNFCCC- und NPT-Regime angewendet.
