Abstract:

Alternative AbstractLanguage

In the recent past, issues of environmental protection have gained importance in logistics. Logistics service providers are also increasingly defining goals in environmental protection and are pursuing environmentally friendly services, methods and instruments. At the same time, logistics service providers are operating in challenging market environments, making apparent that – economically – their commitment to environmental protection can only be explained to a limited extent. A possible explanation for logistics service providers behavior are social i.e. non-market actors and mechanisms whose relevance for environmental protection in supply chain management and logistics is already being discussed in literature. One possible theoretical foundation for such interdependencies between organizations and their environment is formed by neo-institutionalism.

At this point, this work starts and is devoted to the questions of which environmental influences lead to the pursuit of environmental protection by logistics providers and which importance do institutional mechanisms and interdependencies have for logistics service providers’ objectives, means and actions in environmental protection.

Answering these questions is pursuit in three central steps. In a first step, a system model of environmental protection will be set up for logistics service providers. It will include both central elements of environmental protection within logistics service provider systems as well as relevant external groups. Subsequently, central concepts of neo-institutionalism are discussed as the theoretical framework of this thesis, and in the course of a theory-led analysis of the developed system model, hypotheses about the significance of those concepts for the environmental protection by logistics service providers are derived. Finally, an empirical check of the formulated hypotheses and the gaining of further insights regarding key elements and interrelations of environmental protection at logistics service providers are carried out as part of a case study.
