Abstract:

Terrestrial deposits in Cenozoic sedimentary basins often contain important mineral ressources and yielding aquifers. The stratigraphic subdivision of these deposits is difficult due to facies diversity, complex sedimentary architecture and, especially in basins with low subsidence rates, frequent erosive stages. For the investigation of the sedimentary architecture of such basins a sequence stratigraphic approach based on cycles of the A/S ratio (A: accommodation space available for sedimentation; S: sediment supply) is a strong tool. A decrease of the A/S ratio of a fluvial system produces a relative concentration of coarse grained fluvial channel deposits (amalgamation) wheras an increase of the A/S ratio results in a higher preservation potential of fine grained floodplain sediments. In sedimentary sequences fall-rise cycles of the A/S ratio therefore are documented by continuous transitions from sand and gravel at the base to predominant silts and clays in higher profile sections. Thus the sequence stratigraphy based on cycles of the A/S ratio can also help with prediction of sand, gravel and clay deposits as well as aquifers. For the Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin, a Cenozoic subbasin of the Upper Rhine Graben with low subsidence rates, the structural and sedimentary architecture was investigated based on 3500 wells. After a marine to lacustrine development from the Oligocene until the early Miocene and a subsequent erosive stage, fluvial sedimentation started in the Pliocene backfilling an erosive paleovalley network. The sediments are subdivided in a Pliocene and a Lower to Middle Pleistocene fall-rise cycle of the A/S ratio as well as a subsequent A/S fall since the Middle Pleistocene. Furthermore, with respect to lateral differences in the degree of amalgamation, three paleogeographic A/S domains can be distinguished. Sediments with a high degree of amalgamation are assigned to the river Main, which due to continuous watershed shift during the Miocene to Pleistocene became the major sedimentary supply system. Tributary systems from the local highlands are characterized by relatively lower A/S. Basin interior drainage systems are undersaturated with respect to sedimentary load and thus dominated by lacustrine sedimentation. The basin evolution of the Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin can be divided into three tectonic stages. A depositional area which was connected to the Upper Rhine Graben (Hanau Basin) with relative vertical movements of subblocks developed within the Oligocene (A). In the late Chattian to early Aquitanian the relative movements ceased and the basin subsided as a single block (B). Between the Aquitanian and Lower Pleistocene the relative uplift of the Frankfurt Horst being the western margin of the Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin was initiated (C). The A/S ratio of a fluvial sedimentary system is controlled by a complex interaction of multiple processes. Influencing factors for accommodation are e. g. sea level and tectonic uplift or subsidence movements. Sedimentary supply is affected e.g. by uplift rates or climate change in the catchment as well as changes in catchment size. The A/S cycles of the Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin can be correlated with five controlling factors. Since the late Burdigalian a decreasing subsidence rate resulted in a decrease of A/S rate and an evolution of an erosive paleovalley network. In Pliocene the relative uplift of the Frankfurt Horst probably increased accommodation space. In the early Pleistocene an increase of the catchment of the river Main caused growing sedimentary supply rates. In the Lower to Middle Pleistocene an advanced uplift of the Rhenish Massif increased accommodation space. Since the Middle Pleistocene a regional uplift gave rise to a decrease of the A/S ratio. The investigations point out that, especially in basins with low subsidence, external controlling factors can outbalance the dominant effect of rift-related tectonics postulated in classic rift models.
