Abstract:

The main goal of this work was the sampling and characterisation of atmospheric aerosol particles. Particles with diameters from 100 nm to 25 µm were sampled with an five-stage cascade impactor. Atmospheric concentrations of the elements with 10 < Z < 83 (sodium to lead) were determined with help of total reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis (TXRF). Chemical composition, size and morphological characteristics of individual particles were determined by use of high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM). With regard to the interpretation and use of the data in model calculations, it is necessary that the characterised particles can be assigned to defined air masses. This requirement was achieved by the selection of sampling sites without strong particle sources. For sampling of marine aerosol particles the island Helgoland and in case of continental particles the Kleiner Feldberg (Taunus) were chosen. By the systematic particle characterisation over a long period, a parametrization of the chemical particle composition dependent on different air masses was achieved. Because of the complete characterisation in the optical most active size range of 0,1 to 2 µm particle diameter and the identification of the strong absorbing soot component, the mean refractive indices could be determined.
