Abstract:

The thesis covers the chemical conversion of the biological based source materials glycerol and acetic acid with ammonia in water at high temperatures and pressures to the nitrogen-containing intermediates 3 methylpyridine and acetonitrile. The aim of the work was to make a contribution to the establishment of bio-based value chains according to the concept of a biorefinery. Investigations on the dehydration of glycerol to acrolein have been carried out in near-and supercritical water with addition of acids and salts, whereas the low inlet concentration of glycerol and the fast side reactions of acrolein were disadvantageous. Thus the direct conversion of the in-situ formed acrolein to 3 methylpyridine was desirable in order to intercept the unstable intermediate and prevent the storage of it. In said reaction medium, acetonitrile has also been converted to acetamide and ammonium acetate in high yields. It was necessary to clarify whether acetonitrile is producible in commercial quantities by back reaction from ammonium acetate or acetamide respectively. For this purpose, the behavior of salts as starting materials and/or additions in near-and supercritical water was investigated. Concepts could be proposed for industrial production of the desired products after optimization of the process parameters. The use of ammonium salts in hot compressed water led to high yields of 3 methylpyridine in the continuous cyclization reaction of acrolein in the tube reactor. A maximum yield of 48 mol% was obtained at 225 °C, 30 MPa and 25 s residence time with addition of ammonium acetate, whereas the acrolein conversion was almost complete. Similar yields were achieved with ammonium sulphate after 60 s residence time, indicating a strong dependence of the reaction rate on the pH value. A strong increase in the formation rate of acetaldehyde and formaldehyde by retro-aldol reaction of acrolein was observed at temperatures above 250 °C. Yields of 51 mol% of acetaldehyde and 38 mol% of formaldehyde were obtained at 350 °C, 30 MPa, 9 s time residence and 96 mol% acrolein conversion with ammonium acetate. The results enabled the production 3-methylpyridine on the basis of glycerol via a two-step process. A yield of 20 mol% of was obtained in first experiments. Furthermore, significant amounts of acetonitrile could be gained at supercritical conditions of water without addition of a catalyst during the investigations on the continuous production of acetonitrile in the tube reactor. Dehydration of acetamide at 550 °C, 23 MPa and 10 s residence time led to an acetonitrile yield of 31 mol%, whereas ammonium acetate was formed as only byproduct and the carbon recovery was nearly complete. Higher temperatures and residence times led to a decrease of the selectivities due to the decarboxylation reaction of acetic acid. The results offer the production of acetonitrile on the basis of ammonium acetate in liquid state via a two-step process.
