Abstract:

This work analyzes which starting device the combustion engine is best restarted with in any of the possible drive states of a hybrid powertrain layout with a disconnecting clutch between the engine and the electric motor. At first, all technically feasible starting devices are presented and discussed. Two starting procedures are therewith introduced that form the core of the accompanying dissertation of Dipl.-Ing. Sören Müller and this thesis: (a) The Quick Start (QS) which is a form of a starter initiated direct start and (b) The Hybrid Start (HS) with a crankshaft integrated electric motor. This paper covers the research carried out on the Quick Start. The start experiments performed at the test bed have been backed up by the development of a fully dynamic, semi-empiric, physically based simulation model that has been especially designed for the re-start. It is shown that start duration and energy consumption benefit from injecting fuel in the first compression stroke after break-away and disabling the starter right after the first ignition. The conditions to perform such a Quick Start reproducible and robust are provided by a special engine coast down strategy using the throttle valve. The results of the analysis on QS and HS are summarized in a comparison of the start procedures which also includes a thorough investigation of the different energy demands. The evaluation criterions for the selection of the starting device are classified into the following categories: Drive-away performance, comfort, robustness, costs, and emissions. The conclusion states that the start duration and the re-start comfort are particularly better with the HS. A blanket answer cannot be given, if those advantages over the QS counterweigh the considerably higher costs regarding development, expenses, and installation space. In each category the QS is at least competitive, whereas the durability of the starter motor in a hybrid powertrain has to be ensured for lifetime.
