Abstract:

One aim of this work was the investigation of the influence of the cocatalyst triisobutylaluminium (TiBA) on the two step reaction of the ternary activation of metallocenedichlorides by means of NMR spectroscopy. As model catalysts Cp2ZrCl2 and Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2 and as activator N,N-Dimethylaniliniumtetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borat [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)4] (DMAB) were chosen. In the case of Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2 the reaction of the metallocenedichloride with TiBA only led to the monoalkyl complex Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrClBui independent of the Al/Zr ratio. With an Al/Zr ratio of 10 or higher Cp2ZrCl2 reacted to the product [Cp2ZrH2·AlBui3]2. The activation of the metallocenedichloride/TiBA mixtures with DMAB completely generated the cationic metallocene species. For Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2 up to an Al/Zr ratio of 50 two species could be detected. With 100 equivalents of TiBA only the active complex [Ph2C(CpFlu)Zr-(µ-H)-(µ-C4H7)-AlBui2][B(C6F5)4]·AlBui3 was obtained. With 10 or 20 equivalents of TiBA Cp2ZrCl2 reacted at least to 3 products. With 50 equivalents or higher only two cationic metallocene species were formed independent of the Al/Zr ratio. In no case of the activated metallocene complexes the degradation or complexation of [B(C6F5)4]- was detected. The direct reaction between TiBA and DMAB led to boisterous evolution of isobutane probably forming [AlBui2]+ species. At an Al/B ratio of 4 the borate was completely degradated to BBui3. Further products detected were AlBui(C6F5)2 and Al(C6F5)3. For Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2 a mechanism was postulated that explained the formation of the active complex even in the presence of large excess of TiBA. The first step is the protolysis of TiBA by DMAB forming aluminiumcations. The two ternary activated catalyst systems were used for continuously performed high pressure polymerizations of ethylene at 150 MPa and 180 °C. The aim was the investigation of the influence of the concentration of the aluminiumalkyl in the reactor and the influence of the Al/Zr ratio in the catalyst solution on productivity and polymer properties. In the case of Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2 at least 3 molppm TiBA in the reactor were necessary to obtain reasonable polymerizations whereas Cp2ZrCl2 was not active. For both catalyst systems the highest productivities were obtained with 10 molppm TiBA in the reactor. Further increase of the aluminiumconcentration led to a decrease of productivity. With triethylaluminium (TEA) in the reactor the productivities were significantly lower than with TiBA. For both aluminiumalkyls the highest molecular weights were obtained with an aluminiumconcentration of 3 to 10 molppm. With increasing aluminiumconcentration the molecular weights decreased due to rising formation of waxes and rising number of chain transfer reactions. The MWDs were fitted using the Schulz-Zimm distribution. In all cases the amount of waxes was less than 0,5 w%. The estimation of the number of chain transfer reactions showed that less chain transfer reactions occured with TiBA compared with TEA and with Cp2ZrCl2 there are more chain transfer reactions than with Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2. In the case of Cp2ZrCl2 the influence of the Al/Zr ratio in the catalyst solution was overlaid by the influence of the Al/Zr ratio in the reactor due to measurement reasons. In the case of Ph2C(CpFlu)ZrCl2 productivity was doubled if the Al/Zr ratio in the catalyst solution was increased from 10 to 1000. The molecular weights decreased. The polydispersity of 2 remained constant. That was a sign that only one active metallocene species was present in the reactor.
