Abstract:

The investigations were focused on the synthesis of the currently unknown cyclobuta[1,2;3,4]dicyclopentene starting from thiatriquinanes (tetra-tert-butyl-dicyclopenta[b,d]thiophenes). Additionally tert-butyl-substituted, sulfur-bridged metallocenes should be prepared. Oxidation of thiatriquinanes to the corresponding sulfoxides and sulfones could succesfully be performed by using dimethyldioxirane. Subsequent thermal SO or SO2-extrusion showed the formation of the pentafulvalenesystem. For the synthesis of hetero[1]ferrocenophanes a knew method was developed. Accordingly the dilithiated bis(di-tert-butyl-cyclopentadienyl)sulfide reacts with iron(II)chloride to the rac-2,2',4,4'-tetra-tert-butyl-thia[1]ferrocenophane, which could be oxidized to thia[1]ferrocenophaneoxide and dioxide. The X-ray structural characterization of the thia[1]ferrocenophane showed a tilt-angle between the cyclopentadienyl ligands of 29.9(4) and 30.8(4)°. Further the spectroscopical data establish the highly strained structure of this ferrocenophane. Polymerisation of the tetra-tert-butyl-thia[1]ferrocenophanes based on ring-opening was not observed. The thiaferrocenophane and the thiaferrocenophaneoxide were characterized by cyclovoltammetric studies.
