Abstract:

The utilisation of supercritical (sc) fluids has won a great importance during the last fifty years in the range of chemical industry and of fundamental research, because of their interesting chemical physical properties. By varying pressure and temperature, these properties can be continuously changed. The aim of the work presented here is addressed to the use of supercritical ammonia as the solvent and reactant at the same time. By applying this concept alternative reaction pathways for technically interesting demands should be examined. Three reactions were chosen to study this in more detail: the ammonolysis of substituted arenes or isocyanates in a catalyst-free system and the catalysed intermolecular hydroamination of styrene. Generally all screening reactions were carried out in a batch autoclave in a temperature range from 100-250 °C and a pressure range from 60-350 bar. The ammonolysis of substituted arenes deliver high selectivity in the most cases but even after 24 h reaction time low transformations, so that its importance was estimated to a low industrial relevancy and therefor no further investigations were performed. The ammonolysis of isocyanates or real residues from the isocyanate production was carried out in sc ammonia as well as in a mixture water / ammonia. Generally high transformation of the isocyanates with high selectivity to the corresponding amines was observed. The application of sc water / ammonia mixtures was advantageous compared the pure sc ammonia system as it showed better transformations, because of the higher temperature in these systems. The hydroamination is an elegant because to 100 % atom efficient reaction for the production of amines. A catalyst is necessary also ruling the regioselectivity of the addition of ammonia to the multiple bond. The hydroamination reaction of styrene to 2-phenylethylamine as a pharmaceutically interesting product was performed firstly under batch-conditions in supercritical ammonia under (130-180 bar) and (130-190°C) at different reaction times. The primary amine 2-phenylethylamine as well as the secondary and tertiary amines (bis-(2-phenylethyl)amine, tris-(2-phenylethyl)amine) were obtained as the major products, side products arising from the oligomerisation of styrene were observed as well. On the base of the experimental data a mechanism of the reaction explaining the formation of all products was proposed. In order to study the kinetics of the reaction and to optimise it, the reaction was accomplished in a continuous tube reactor. 2-phenylethylamine can be produced in yields up to 60 % with a selectivity of more than 90 % with residence times of several minutes in the reactor. On the base of these experiments with respect to the reaction mechanism a mathematical model for the reaction was created describing the kinetics of the reaction. The activation energy was determined to 38.5 KJ/Mol (+/- 1.5 KJ/Mol at 140 and 200 bars) and the maximum rate constants were calculated to 0.2 min-1 (at 200 bars and 140 or 160°C). Therefor, with the concept of the application of sc ammonia as the solvent and the reactant at the same time for the hydroamination of styrene it was successfully shown that an alternative process to 2-phenylethylamine could be developed. Side reactions like the oligomerisation of styrene or the further reaction of the 2-phenylethylamine to the undesired secondary or tertiary amine were suppressed by control of the phase behaviour.
