Abstract:

Heterogeneously catalysed hydrogenation represents an important type of reaction in the industrial-scale production of chemicals. The aim of this thesis was the development of a liquid-phase process with 4-substituted phenolic compounds to be hydrogenated to the cyclohexanone analogues. At a first state of investigation batch-experiments with 4-(4‘-n-propylcyclohexyl)-phenole as substrate and optimization of various process parameters were caried out. The comparison of the hydrogenation results with Pt, Rh and Pd shows that palladium is the most selective metal. Furthermore for Pd the selectivity-conversion-diagram indicates that cyclohexanoles are formed exclusively in a consecutive step from the cyclohexanone intermediate. Impregnation of the Pd-charcoal-catalyst with basic salts like disodium carbonate strongly increases its activity and selectivity. The use of non-polar solvents with the Pd-catalyst leads to high contents of cyclohexanone intermediate at high phenole conversion. Increase in hydrogen pressure results in minor selectivities for similar degrees of educt conversion and thus in higher contents of undesired cyclohexanolic compounds. In a second stage of experiments the kinetics of the various reaction steps were examined harnessing a continously driven stirred tank reactor (solvent o-xylole). Experiments and calculative tests realized before made sure that reaction rates were not influenced by phase transfer limitations. These examinations evidently show that phenolic educt and cyclohexanone intermediate do not interfere one anothers conversion and there seems to be no competition for catalytic sites. From the kinetic data a reaction model could be drawn. The comparison between batch-experiments and conversion-time-curves calculated from the mathematical model shows good convenience. As inspite of optimate conditions the hydrogenation of the above mentioned phenolic derivative results in a product with about 2 % content of cyclohexanole and the same percentage of non-reacted educt the aim of a third complex of experiments was to examine ways of purification of the crude cyclohexanone. The use of the pyridine-sulfurtrioxide-complex allows the separation of the alcoholic compounds via its pyridinium-monoalkylsulfate-salts. Selective hydrogenation of the phenolic educt and removal of non-reacted phenole and over-hydrogenated cyclohexanole leads to cyclohexanone products with purities greater than 99,7 % and yields of 92 % (related to phenole educt).
