Abstract:

Hydration in CsBrEu3 bzw.

X-ray image plates based on photostimulable storage phosphors, which are used in the field of medical diagnostics and structural analysis, gained a lot of attention in the last decade. Today’s image plates usually consist of BaFBr:Eu2+ particles imbedded in an organic binder or needle-like CsBr:Eu2+ crystals grown by physical vapor deposition. More recently the feasibility to increase spatial resolution by pressing CsBr:Eu2+ into transparent image plates was explored. In the present work the interdependence of structural properties and functional mechanisms during the synthesis of the image plates and their influence on the spatial resolution and the PSL sensitivity are investigated. A new production route for image plates has been developed, synthesizing CsBr:Eu2+ powder from a precipitation reaction of aqueous CsBr solution with ethanol. This new route allows the control of features like a homogeneous grain size and grain shape of the obtained powder. After drying and subsequent compacting the powder, disk-like samples were fabricated and their resulting photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) properties like yield and spatial resolution were determined. It will be shown that hydration of such disks causes the CsBr:Eu2+ powder to recrystallize starting from humidity exposed surfaces into the sample interior up to a completely polycrystalline sample resulting in a decreasing PSL yield and an increasing resolution. Subsequent annealing leads to a grain refinement combined with a large PSL yield increment and a minor effect on the spatial resolution. By first annealing the as made disk one observes a strong increment of the PSL yield and almost no effect on the spatial resolution. During subsequent hydration the recrystallization is hindered with minor structural changes of the grains. The related PSL yield drops slightly with increasing hydration time and the spatial resolution drops considerably. The obtained PSL properties with respect to structure will be discussed within a simple model. Further europium-rich phases develop between the storage phosphor particles during synthesis and are transformed to CsEuBr3 and Cs2EuBr5 ⋅ 10 H2O during annealing and hydration, respectively. These phases have considerable influence on the PSL yield and the structural changes during above mentioned treatments. During hydration europium ions of the dissolved phases are incorporated into the storage phosphor by the recrystallisation. Annealing leads to formation of a less readily soluble phase causing the hinderance for recrystallisation during subsequent hydration.
