Abstract:

The aim of the present work was the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers consisting of polystyrene and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PHEMA) via anionic polymerization and the generation of highly ordered membranes via the self-assembly and non-solvent induced phase separation (SNIPS) process. It was possible to obtain an integral asymmetric membrane with an isoporous top layer by optimizing various SNIPS parameters. The demonstrated high water-flux reveals the high potential of block copolymer membranes for water purification applications. Furthermore, the modification of the PHEMA-segment by conventional synthetic strategies was pursued. The functionalization of PHEMA-segments with ferrocene derivatives has enabled the generation of stimuli-responsive membranes, which showed a switchable water-flux depending on the oxidation state of ferrocene. Moreover, it was possible to functionalize the PHEMA-segment with glycine to achieve a primary-amine containing membrane via SNIPS process with an isoporous top layer. It is shown, that the amine-containing block copolymers and membranes can be selectively functionalized with further amino acids or peptides without altering the previously generated membrane structure.
