Abstract:

Within this thesis the material sodium cobalt oxide is studied as a cathode material for intercalation batteries. To get insights to the electronical structure of the material at various degrees of intercalation (corresponding to charge states in a battery) model cells were built under ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions. By electrochemical deintercalation in the UHV operando measurements by photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were possible. This is a new measurement method, developed within this thesis. Further experiments with model cells covered x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements of the cathode material and interface analysis between electrolyte and electrode materials. Based on the model experiments a detailed understanding of the electronic structure evolution for sodium cobalt oxide at different potentials vs. sodium was obtained. Consequences for the electrode potential and stability were discussed and compared with the well-known layered oxide cathode material lithium cobalt oxide.
