Abstract:

Biological deposits often cause problems in paper production like spots and holes in the product as well as odour nuisances during the production process. For the prevention of biofilm developement and to the inhibition of the growth of biofilms large amounts of biocides and dispersing agents are used which causes high costs and enviromental pollution. In this work some polymer paper additives which work by their cationic charge already biocide should be modified thus that they adsorb on paper machines surfaces better and prevent there the biolfilm developement. Cationic polyvinyl amine was selected and modified with alkyl phosphonic acids. Afterwards the customary ones and the modified polyvinyl amines were examined for their effect on the biofilm developement under paper machines similar conditions as well as the influence of these polymers on the paper production process. The phosphonic acid group conduces, on this occasion, as an anchor on the steel surfaces, so that the antimikrobial working polymers adsorb on the surface and prevent there the development of a biofilm. For the investigations lab arrangements were built up in which it is possible to cultivate biofilms under paper machines similar conditions and to examine the effect of the polymers for the biofilm development. The estimation of the biofilm development occurred by means of a quartz crystal microbalance optimised for this and with the pressure drop in a current pipe. The biofilm development could be reduced by nearly all used polyvinyl amines clearly. The influence of the modified polyvinyl amines on the paper production process was estimated by using filler retention, formation, rip length and the optical qualities.
