Abstract:

In this thesis the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in lithium-ion batteries has been studied. For this purpose, LiCoO2 as a cathode material and LixSi as a anode material have been prepared by RF sputtering and thermal evaporation. After preparation of the electrode materials, typical battery solvents have been adsorbed at low temperature on these layers and analysed by photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). These methods allow the analysis of decomposition and reaction products as well as the electronic band alignment at the interface.

From the model experiments a detailled unterstanding of the SEI formation can be obtained. The reaction products of several solvents are identified and the transfer of electrons and lithium ions is discussed. Based on this data conclusions regarding the reactivity of different solvents on different electrodes can be drawn.
