Abstract:

The micromechanical behaviour of concrete due to external loading depends on the particular properties of the aggregates and the cementitious matrix as well as the interaction of both constituents. Furthermore, the bonding behaviour between these constituents plays a key role. This has been proven by numerous investigations in a qualitative way, while a quantitative description still missing since there is a lack of suitable measuring techniques, which are able to detect stress induced alteration within this small but important region with adequate accuracy. However, a quantitative description of these interactions is of essential interest for a better understanding of the effective material behaviour and especially for the derivation of more realistic constitutive laws. Within the scope of this thesis full field elastic and inelastic deformations and resulting fracture processes at the surface of model concrete due to external loading have been detected with height resolution with the help the optical method digital image correlation. This kind of model concrete reveals the mesostructure of concrete in a two-dimensional way. Hereby, the mechanical properties of the constituents and the geometry of the specimen have been varied systematically. The result is a detailed description of deformation fields and resulting fracture kinematics in the form of a micromechanical model. According to the derived model, numerical simulations where conducted in order to prove the quality of existing constitutive laws and fracture models for describing the micromechanical behaviour of concrete in a numerical way. By the use of the ultrasonic measuring technique on real concrete the transferability of the obtained findings has been achieved and confirmed.
