Abstract:

The aim of the work was to check metallocene-based catalyst systems for their suitability as drop-in catalysts in existing production plants using solution polymerization. Concerning this polymerizations with ternary catalyst systems, consisting of a metallocene dichloride, an aluminum alkyl and an anilinium borate, were executed. The investigations were performed in a semi-continuously operated batch reactor at temperatures of 100 to 140 °C and pressures of 2 to 7 MPa. Prior investigating kinetic data of polymerizations the phase compositions of the system ethene / toluene and ethene / toluene / polymer were determined. On the basis of received kinetic data the deactivation of metallocene systems was systematically examined. For the first time different types of metallocene catalysts was investigated at conditions of the solution process. The ethene polymerization rate could be described with a deactivation of first order of the active species in the polymerization process. The type of the cocatalyst and the lignads of the metallocene showed a substantial influence on the deactivation rate. Important variables on space-time yield of the polymer are the concentrations of ethene and metallocene. Varying the pressure of ethene from 2 to 7 MPa a reaction order of 2 was measured at a temperature of 100 °C. Concerning this it is favorable to carry out polymerizations at high pressure of ethene. Varying the concentration the metallocene a reaction order of 1 was determined. For the polymerizations a minimum concentration of metallocene was required. With catalysts on the basis of well-known standard metallocenes, polymers with unimodal molecular weight distributions are received at the conditions of the solution polymerization. In the context of this work new donor-functionalized metallocenes was synthesized. Polymerizations with this donor-functionalized metallocenes produced polymers with broad, bimodal molecular weight distributions. These bimodal molecular weight distributions could be fit by overlay of two Schultz-Flory distributions
