Abstract:

Nanostructures, such as nanowires, nanotubes and nanoparticles are of great interest in many application fields by virtue of their altered properties in comparison to bulk material. Especially magnetic nanostructures are of high interest due to their unique magnetic characteristics, which can be achieved by precise morphology and composition control. The influence of the synthesis parameters on the magnetic properties of one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanowires and nanotubes with high aspect ratio is studied in this work. Two methods are used for the chemical synthesis of the nanostructure: Electrodeposition of metals is known as the most prominent method to synthesize one-dimensional nanostructures – mostly used for nanowires – in a template, which is either anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) or an ion-track etched polymer. An alternative synthesis process, which leads to metallic nanotubes, is the electroless plating procedure. The template surface is plated with a metal by a surface concordant autocatalytic reduction reaction. The advantage of this method is the lack of an external power supply and therefore, both conductive and non-conductive substrates can be coated by the deposited metal. Depending on the resulting magnetic properties, the synthesized structures can find their applications in different areas of use, such as data storage, sensor technology, catalysis, transportation or separation processes, spintronics or permanent magnetism. Especially the application field of high-performance permanent magnets shows a great demand for one dimensional magnetic nanostructures. High-performance permanent magnets require a high-energy product, which results in a high saturation magnetization and a large coercive field at the same time. Current hard magnets typically consist of rare earth-transition metal alloys. The transition metal provides a high magnetization whereas the rare earth element causes a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy, which leads to a high coercive field. Due to the criticality of rare earth elements, intense research for rare earth free permanent magnets as an alternative has begun. In this regard, large aspect ratio (length:diameter > 100) of one-dimensional nanostructures such as nanowires or nanotubes of 3d transition metals were suggested as possible candidates due to their strong magnetic shape anisotropy. Aligned ensembles of such nanowires show a high remnant magnetization and a large coercive field and are promising alternative to rare earth containing magnets. Ni-, Co- and Fe-nanowires as well as nanowires of alloys were synthesized by electrodeposition in ion-track etched polymer templates with different compositions. Those nanowires where thoroughly characterized by SEM for their morphology, EDX for their composition and XRD for the crystallinity and texture. For the determination of the magnetic properties, SQUID and VSM measurements were conducted. Those measurements illustrate the increase of the nanowires’ coercive field in comparison to thin films. However, the properties are also dependent on the diameter of the nanowires, the crystallographic texture and their composition. The magnetic features were discussed in dependence on the preparation parameters. Nanotubes made out of Ni, Co and the metal alloys of NiCo, NiFe and CoFe were synthesized by electroless deposition in ion-track etched polymer templates. The composition of the alloy was adjusted by the amount of metal salt in the plating bath and was determined by EDX-measurements. The magnetic properties were investigated by SQUID and VSM measurements. They turned out to be dependent on the composition and the wall thickness of the nanotubes. Depending on the observed properties the structures are applied in different example applications.
