Abstract:

Aim of this work was to develop anode catalysts for the electrochemical oxidation of CO-contaminated hydrogen and methanol in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Therefore the binary catalyst formulations Pt/Ru, Pt/Sn, Pt/V, Pt/Mo, Pt/Pd and Pt/Ni as well as the ternary formulations Pt/Ru/Sn, Pt/Ru/W and Pt/Ru/Mo were prepared using a colloid method suitable for the preparation of nanodisperse alloys. With these catalysts, membrane-electrode-assemblies were manufactured by a spraying method and operated in single cell blocks using H2 containing 150 ppm CO and methanol as fuels. In case of the elements Ru, Mo, W and Ni cocatalytic activities were found for both reactions, whereas Sn was only active for the oxidation of H2/150 ppm CO. The best catalyst system was Pt/Ru/W, which was considerably more active than a commercial Pt/Ru catalyst representing the state of the art. Furthermore, a number of macrocyclic transition metal complexes were investigated towards their cocatalytic activites for anodic oxidation of H2/CO and Methanol at platinum. For nickelphthalocyanintetrasulfonic acid, cobaltphthalocyanin and sulfonated rhodiumtetraphenylporphin some cocatalytic activity was found for both reactions, but was not as high as the activity of Ru. In parallel to the single cell-experiments short term experiments on methanol oxidation in an electrochemical half cell were performed to judge this method which is widely used in literature. It turned out that the results of these experiments were not always in agreement with the data derived from long-term measurements in single cells. Therefore, this method is not suitable to determine the activity of electrocatalysts for anodic methanol oxidation.
