Abstract:

To survive in dynamic markets firms should renew their competitive advantages over time. Therefore, innovation is the key factor for growth and improvement and provides firm’s long-lasting success. Both incremental innovations, which improve existing products, and radical innovations, which make new businesses possible, are an important fundament for the effective development of firms. Management of radical innovation projects is a remarkable challenge. High uncertainties in technology and market are associated with low existing expertise in the new field of action. Major competence gaps exist, especially in the beginning of radical innovation projects. In this dissertation, a competence-based management approach that considers the specific requirements of radical innovation projects is developed. Research starts by going over existing literature in the fields of competence and innovation management. After that, a model of innovation competence is defined. Using this model, seven radical innovation projects are examined via case study research. The results are used to develop hypotheses for research and design notes for management. The developed model of innovation competence and the hypotheses of this study contribute considerably to innovation research. Additionally, the advice provided will help to get a better understanding of the development and management of competence within radical innovation projects.
