Abstract:

The human machine interface of a modern aircraft is a highly complex working environment. The resulting cockpit personnel requirements are extensive and various. With respect to the performance of the overall human machine system, the human individual increasingly represents the bottleneck. Thus a major challenge of current flight deck development activities comprises the optimization of the human machine interface, aiming to maximize the pilot performance. The objective of this paper is the development and evaluation of a novel display concept to visualize spatial information. This is to be achieved by the increased pilot situational awareness generated during interaction with the cockpit displays. Based on a large area screen, a visualization concept is developed that combines the advantages of conventional spatial displays. For this purpose, the benefits of an egocentric perspective view shall be realized on a global level by expanding the horizontal field of view to 360 degrees to a panoramic view. Thus, additional views to generate global situation awareness are rendered obsolete. Based on a domain specific task analysis, representative cockpit tasks are identified. After conducting some thorough analysis of the properties of the panoramic view, two tasks were prioritized. As part of the comparative evaluations, the performance of test persons using the novel display concept is compared with that of the two conventional displays. The conventional displays cover a twodimensional and an exocentric view. The data collection is carried out with test persons with extensive flight experience, including Airbus test pilots, former pilots of the German Air Force as well as weapon system engineers. Both investigations indicate performance differences by using the different spatial displays. Contrary to the expectations, the developed panoramic display cannot be recommended for one of the two investigated tasks. The side to side comparison between the panoramic display and the two dimensional display shows benefits of the panoramic display. However, in comparison with the exocentric display the panoramic display doesn’t show superiority. The reason for the performance deficit can substantially be explained with two effects; the hemisphere effect and the trajectory transforming. The hemisphere effect is the phenomenon that the understanding of object positions in the rear hemisphere of a perspective display requires more cognitive resources than the understanding of object positions in the front hemisphere. The trajectory transformation characterizes the particularity of the panoramic display, to transform the curvature of trajectories in a matter of which the operator is unfamiliar. The impacts of additional training to reduce these effects were not evaluated. Although accepted by the test personnel, the usage of the novel spatial display in aircraft cannot be recommended. However, the potential for other uses cases, in particular in the range of the integration of sensor images, or as assistance display, can be rated high. These potential applications could be the object of future research efforts.
