Abstract:

This work concerns itself in two parts with two problems of thermoplastics in the context of the competition of inorganic and organic transparent materials. In both cases the thermoplastics will be modified with phase forming additives, so that if possible transparency is not lost. The phases of the additive must therefore be nanoscopically small, so that they do not scatter light. Both topics are further linked, in that the solution to the synthesis problem utilises techniques of heterogeneous polymerization in aqueous or alcoholic media. In Part I attempts are described to synthesis transparent-impact toughened thermoplastics with the aid of elastomer nano particles. For some time brittle thermoplastics such as polystyrene (PS) and its acrylonitrile copolymers (SAN) or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) have been modified to be impact resistant by the addition of elastomers, however they lose their transparency, because these elastomers are present in dispersed domains, which scatter light. According to a new theory, the model of precavited thermoplastics, however particularly small, nanoscopic elastomer domains should be in the position to prevent brittle failure not through Micro crazing, but by ductile shear flow. The model forecasts that a brittle thermoplastic, if its matrix is loosened with sufficiently small pores in close proximity to one another undergoes ductile flow during impact, instead of brittle fracture. Because of the loosening by pores the thermoplastic is called precavited. Instead of genuine nano-pores, which would coalesce, elastomer nano-particles must be used as pseudo pores. In part II of this work, trials were also carried out to increase the refractive index of thermoplastic materials by blending or mixing with nanoparticles which posses high refractive indices. Titandioxide nanoparticles were used because they belong to the metallic oxides that have high refractive indices and are still colourless. The TiO2 nanoparticles with diameter between 4-13 nm are synthesised with a Sol-gel-Process in the presence of DMAc as solvent. For the first time highly concentrated TiO2 nanoparticles with 20 wt.% titandioxide in the dispersion were synthesised. The TiO2 nanoparticles are encapsulated with Polymer via Emulsion polymerisation. Films and blends of the TiO2-Polymer hybrids particles were transparent and colourless and exhibited high refractive indices.
