Abstract:

Previous studies concerning compounds of the alkaline and alkaline earth metals with the elements of the groups 14 and 15, which mainly belong to the class of Zintl-phases, were focused on the anionic part of the structure. These anions of often high formal charges have to be coordinated in the first sphere by cations of suitable number, charge and size. So the cations influence the anionic structure or stabilize anions of a certain geometry. At the beginning of this thesis only few representatives of the phosphidostannates were known. Considering the great difference in the radii and electronegativities the question arose, if these differences lead to significantly differing patterns and coordinations or if - a suitable choice of cations presupposed - homologue series beginning with the phosphidosilicates up to the phosphidostannates can be prepared. In consequence this work deals with the synthesis and structural characterization of ternary phosphidostannates of alkali and alkaline earth metals respectively as well as quaternary phosphidostannates, which contain a further alkaline/alkaline earth metal in regard to a finer graduation in size and charge of the cationic partial structure. To study the cationic influence in homologue series the higher homologues of phosphorus, namely As, Sb and Bi were included. Up to now ortho-pnictidostannates(IV) were only known from the Na8[SnSb4] type structure with big anions like [SnSb4]8- or [SnAs4]8-. The expansion of these ternary systems to quaternary including alkaline and alkaline earth metals led to pnictidostannates of Na4Ca2[SiP4] type structure with the new representatives Na4Ca2[SnP4], K4Sr2[SnAs4] as well as - with the cations K+ and Ba2+ - the first homologue series concerning the pnictidostannate anion K4Ba2[Sn(E15)4] (E15 = P, As, Sb, Bi). Depending on the conditions of preparation K4Sr2[SnAs4] also forms a superstructure variant with three times the unit cell volume. Dimeric anions of edge sharing tetrahedra are found for the ternary compounds K5[SnAs3] (Na5[SiP3] type structure) and the quaternary compounds Na2K3[SnP3] and Na2Cs3[SnP3] (Na2K3[SnAs3] type structure). Basic units of pnictidostannates(III) are anions [Sn2(E15)6]12- isostructural to Si2Cl6, which can be described with respect to their geometry as E15-antiprisms each of them centered by a Sn-Sn dumbbell. The novel anion [Sn12P24]36- in Sr3[Sn2P4] resulting from a cyclic condensation of six trigonal antiprisms sharing common edges is the first example for an oligomeric anion formed of units (E14)2(E15)6 and for a cyclic anion in the family of pnictidosilicates and the higher homologues at all. In pnictidostannates(II) Sn is y-tetragonally coordinated being bonded to three ligand atoms only. Longer known are the arsenic like net anions [SnAs-] and [SnSb-]- in the structures of Na0.3K0.7[SnAs], K[SnAs] and K[SnSb]. Na[SnP] could be prepared as the first phosphidostannate in the same structure type. Obviously the stacking of nets [SnP-] forms an appropriate coordination for the small cation Na+ only, larger cations could not be inserted. The use of two different cations of one group (E1/E1'-compounds) often allows an especially favourable packing, the use of two cations with different charges (E1/E2-compounds) additionally allows an adjustment of the number of cations necessary for a suitable coordination. Discrepancies in the packing caused by the number of cations necessary for the coordination of the anionic group also can be compensated by additional interstitial anions, mainly O2-, taking the surplus charges. Concerning these aspects comparative studies on pnictides and pnictidoxides were carried out in the course of this work. The structures of the new compounds K2Ba3Sb4 and Ba3As2O as well as of the isotypic phases KBa4Sb3O and KBa4Bi3O show analogue layers, formed of interconnected polyhedra of twelve cations encapsulating the dimeric anions E15-E15. If this obviously good coordination does not fulfil charge compensation, additional anions ((E15)3-, O2-) either occupy interstices available in the structure or voids generated by varying the stacking of the layers. Especially the existence of such mixed 'salts' reveals the soundness of valence concepts far to the semimetallic realm.
