Abstract:

Clathrate hydrates belong to the class of inclusion or cage compounds whereby a hydrogen bonded network of water molecules forms closed cages in that other molecules can be locked. Additionally, hydrates, which exist as solid crystalline compounds, are counted as non stoichiometric compounds, which means that not all cages are occupied by guest molecules. In this thesis clathrate hydrates of the structure II with three different guest molecules like tetrahydrofurane (THF), cyclopentane (CP), and dioxolane (DX) are prepared and examined by temperature dependent Raman and Brillouin scattering technique. These three different kind of guest molecules consist of a five membered ring and distinguish each other in their dipole moment. The Raman experiments show in the aqueous guest/water solution as well as in the clathrate at low temperatures the seperation of several vibrational guest modes which is connected by a changed guest-host dynamic. In comparison to the pure phase in the aqueous phase there exist an additional interaction possibility between the water and the guest molecules which is attributed to hydrogen bonding between these two kind of molecules. In the clathrate at temperatures below 100K the cages contract, so that in this case the guest-host interaction increases, too and influences the vibrational guest modes in a similiar case like in the aqeous solution. However, the frequency value of these mode separations in the aqueous solution is higher than in the clathrate which leads to the conclusion that there exist no hydrogen bonding between water and guests in the clathrate phase. Furthermore the longitudinal sound velocity and the elastic constant C11 of the cubic system which are determined from Brillouin experiments on THF-Hydrate become softer below 160K and lead up to a plateau till they increase again below 80K. This behaviour could be a sign of an order/disorder transition in the clathrate which is connected to a changed protonic order of the host structure.
