Abstract:

The present work is concerned with the analytical and numerical investigation of electrostatic quadrupolar pick-ups. These pick-ups are sensors in accelerator physics which are sensitive to the second moment of an electrically charged particle beam and are used in beam diagnostics amongst other things for determining the transverse beam emittance by means of the measurement of the so second moment of the beam.

The two most known signal processing methods for measuring the quadrupolar signal und thus the second moment of the beam are the difference over sum and the log ratio method. The quadrupolar signal obtained from these two basic methods depends on both the second moment of the beam, which is the information we need, as well as the beam position. Consequently, a reasonable accuracy in the separation of the quadrupolar moment will only be achieved if the value of the beam position is small, so that the linearity of the dipole signal is assured with respect to the beam position.

The main goal of this work is to develop a method for measuring the quadrupolar signal, with which even for large values of the beam position, the second moment of the beam can be determined with a reasonable accuracy. The method developed in this study will be tested against various pick-up designs and compared with the above mentioned traditional methods.

In addition, various pick-up types, that have been used so far as beam position monitors, will be investigated numerically to find out whether they can be operated as quadrupolar pick-ups.
