Abstract:

The production of (meth-)acrylates in industrial scale requires the use of stabilizers in the reprocessing step to avoid the unintentional radical polymerisation of the monomers. In this work the processes which are occurring during the inhibition period are examined. In acrylic acid the consumption kinetic of the stabilizer systems phenothiazine (PTZ) and hydroquinone monomethylether (MeHQ) are investigated as function of different process parameters. Parallel to the stabilizer consumption the oxygen consumption in acrylic acid, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate was analysed in a special reactor. The results in acrylic acid and its esters are not comparable, because in acrylic acid for example at 80 °C a tenfold higher oxygen consumption is detectable. The examinations show the ambivalent role of oxygen which is acting on the one hand as retarder and on the other hand as a potential radical source by the formation of peroxides. With the results the radical formation rate and the inhibitor consumption by radical, oxidation and thermal reactions could be calculated. An additional aspect was the alteration of acrylic acid during the inhibition period. Under process conditions the formation of diacrylic and triacrylic acid was observed. The formation of these oligomers can not by inhibited by PTZ and MeHQ and influences the polymerisation behaviour considerable. Furthermore it was shown that different metal ions (Fe 3+, Ni 2+, Cr 3+) and aldehydes (acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, benzaldehyde, furfural), which can be found in the reprocessing step of the monomers as contaminations or side products, influence the inhibition period and the oxygen consumption of the (meth-)acrylates. Already 5 ppm of Fe 3+ ions increase the oxygen consumption in acrylic acid at 80 °C to 440 % and decrease the inhibition period. With the results of the stabilizer and oxygen consumption a calculations of the inhibition period is possible. Additional the risk potential of different contaminations can be estimated. Based on these insights a optimised technical process is proposed.
