Abstract:

Over the years the requirements were constantly increased to the exhaust quality and the consumption by the legislator. On the other hand from view of the customers the demands for economy, driving pleasure, security and reliability have priority. Only by the rising portion of electronic control units and microcontrollers in the vehicle, functions based on complex model based controllers and adaptive algorithms can be applied to convert around these partly opposite demands. In this thesis a thermodynamic model of a turbo charger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) is presented, as it is used with small, high-speed diesel engines for the charging of the combustion air. This simple model is designed to supply qualitatively so good results from the geometrical parameters of the turbo charger, that the model is applicable in engine and vehicle simulations before testing series are started on dynamic engine test stands. For this use no additional measurements should be necessary. It is to supply thereby also physically justified results in such operation points, which are usually not reached by the turbo charger during the stationary measurement of the manufacturer. This is in particular necessary for the development of dynamic controller concepts. By the application of the simple model presented here, which is based on physical laws and configured by few parameters, a simulation without preceding measurements can supply already useful results. These results can be used in any case, in order to specify the internal structure of artificial neural networks and accomplish a basis training. In addition such a light-gray-box model already permits the interpretation of internal conditions and relations, although in the model simplifications and a concentration of parameters are realized. On the basis of an introduction to the physical and thermodynamic bases in this thesis the structure of the turbocharger is analyzed and subdivided into individual partial models with concentrated functionality. For the turbo charger model certain simplifying acceptance are defined, which are permissible regarding its operational area. These partial models are finally interconnected to the complete model and used with an exemplary data record for the simulation of a turbo charger with variable turbine geometry. The simulation results are discussed regarding their information content and verified with manufacturer data.
