Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was the development of helically chiral polyisocyanates as ligands for homogeneous asymmetric transition metal catalysis. Polymers with single-handed helices should be synthesised by copolymerisation of chiral and achiral monomers. Phosphane-functionalised side chains should enable complex formation with transition metals. Thus, polymeric multiple-site catalysts should be obtained, with their asymmetric induction controlled by the helically-chiral superstructure of the polymer main chain. Anionic polymerisation of hexylisocyanate was deployed as a test system for the development of novel methods of polyisocyanate synthesis. Polymerisation in THF with sodium cyanide as initiator allowed for a significantly enhanced control of the degree of polymerisation and molecular weight distribution, compared to the established polymerisation in DMF. For polyisocyanates synthesised with isotopically pure Na13CN as initiator, a 13C-NMR-spectroscopic method for determination of the degree of polymerisation was developed by means of start group analysis. Phosphane-functionalised polyisocyanates were synthesised for the first time. Copolymers of achiral 2-(diphenylphosphanylborane)-ethylisocyanate and chiral (R)-2,6-dimethylheptylisocyanate (DMHIC) showed high optical activities, indicating a preferred helical conformation. Rhodium(I)-complexes obtained with these polymeric ligands proved to be active catalysts in the hydrogenation of acetamido cinnamic acid, although no stereoselectivity was observed. Copolymers of the homologous phosphane monomer 3-(diphenylphosphanylborane)-propylisocyanate and DMHIC also exhibited high optical activities. Rhodium(I)-complexes obtained with these polymers were shown to be active catalysts in the hydrogenation of acetamido cinnamic acid as well, this time with low stereoselectivities of up to 15%ee. In summary, phosphane-functionalised polyisocyanates were synthesised and used as ligands in asymmetric catalysis for the first time.
