Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the formulation of balance and constitutive equations to be applied to a mixture of viscous, heat conducting fluids. The mixture is saturated, that is, no voids are allowed to exist inside the mixture body. Possible phase changes between the mixture components are also taken into account. All components are supposed to have a constant true density, so that volume fractions can be used as variables instead of mass densities. The saturation constraint is incorporated into the system of equations by elimination of one volume fraction. To find restrictions on the constitutive equations an inequality for the production of entropy - representing the second law of thermodynamics - is used. The combination of the balance equations for volume fractions, momentum and energy with the entropy inequality is carried out according to Müller and Liu treating the balance equations as restrictions on the entropy inequality in analogy to the Lagrange method of calculus. A special issue of this examination is the question, how the choice of constitutive variables affects the derived results and the applicability of Liu's theorem and the theorem of Cauchy & Kovalevskaya.
