Abstract:

This work describes the analysis and the results of the asymmetric heavy ion collisions of calcium and gold nuclei at beam energies of 1.5 GeV per nucleon. The data have been taken with the FOPI detector, installed at the accelerator SIS at the GSI in Darmstadt. The detector measures charged particles with a nearly complete solid angle coverage. The physics of heavy ion collisions and the particularities of an asymmetric reaction geometry are discussed, the analysis technique is described. Special emphasis is given to the technical difficulties caused by the asymmetry of the reaction. One observable which has been studied is the rapidity distribution of protons and single charged fragments in central collisions. The comparison to a microscopic transport calculation (IQMD) shows that the nuclei are not completely stopped in the collision - the free nucleon-nucleon cross section used in the model overpredicts the stopping of the projectile nucleons. The large phase space coverage of the detector allows the reconstruction of the reaction plane and therewith the investigation of the collective flow observables sidewards flow and squeeze-out in perhipheral collisions. The sidewards flow analysis allows to determine the effective center of mass system of the asymmetric reaction. From that it is deduced that more nucleons participate in the reaction as expected from the geometrical nuclear overlap. The data show squeeze out at the effective center of mass rapidity, the shape of the azimuthal angular distributions and the size of the signal reflect the different spectator population relative to the reaction plane. The comparision to IQMD calculations show that the data prefer a soft rather than a hard nuclear equation of state.
