Abstract:

In the past years there was made a lot of progress in developing selective polymer processes, which allow the synthesis of well defined structures and architectures of polymeric materials. These are superior in their properties, application and functionality compared to the earlier materials. One of those processes for the synthesis of materials with defined molecular structures is the Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). The constitution as well as the molecular weight and the polydispersity, the type and the number of end groups can be adjusted by ATRP. In the synthesis of block copolymers the number of blocks, the block length and the distribution of the block length can be tuned. In this thesis the synthesis of linear and star shaped block copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) und styrene through ATRP was examined. Tailor made linear AB- and ABA-block copolymers with PMMA inner block could be prepared by sequential monomer addition and were characterized by 2D-chromatography (LC-CC coupled with SEC). In the same manner three-, four-, eight- and 22-armed star block copolymers could be synthesized. SEC with light-scattering detection shows agreement with predictions of computer simulations in the resulting number and length of the arms as well as in the distribution of the block length of the polymers. Additionally copolymers of MMA und styrene with gradient transition between the two end blocks of PMMA and Polystyrene were prepared. In another part of this thesis a new technique was successfully developed in melt processing polymers prepared by ATRP resulting in graft copolymers. Those poly(methyl methacrylates) and polystyrenes were end group modified with azides for reactive extrusion process with polymers containing double bonds in their chain. By copolymerization MMA with allyl methacrylate with various contents defined back bone polymers can as well be synthesized by ATRP for extrusion process.
