Abstract:

Transition metal mediated asymmetric catalysis is one of the most active areas of today's organic chemistry. In this context, helical-chiral polymers without main chain chirality, that have been developed by Reggelin's group, represent a new type of ligand. This PHD-thesis aimed at the synthesis of helical polymethacrylates containing nitrogen as donor-atoms, the complexation of transition metals and the usage of these complexes as catalysts for asymmetric reactions. Single-handed helical, monodentate palladium-complexes of poly(3-pyridyldibenzosuberyl methacrylate) have been synthesized and characterized. By using these complexes it could be proved for the first time, that helical-chiral polymers without further chiral elements are suitable ligands for asymmetric transition metal catalysis: The product of the palladium-catalyzed allylic substitution reaction of diphenylpropenyl acetate with dimethyl malonate could be isolated in high yields and with significant enantiomeric excesses up to 33%. The configuration of the product as well as the observed selectivity results directly from the helical-chiral nature of the polymeric ligand. Subsequently, the system was optimized by a rational approach – bidentate complexation of the metal to raise the catalytic activity and improvement of the conformational stability of the helical secondary structure to increase the enantioselectivity: Using a statistic 1:1-copolymer of trityl methacrylate and phenyl-bis-(2-pyridyl)-methacrylate as ligand, the substitution product was obtained with up to 60% ee. Finally, new helical polymethacrylates with bipyridine lateral groups and the palladium complexes thereof habe been synthesized and characterized, respectively. The bidentate complexes, i.e. of poly(5-(2,2'-bipyridinyl)-phenyl methacrylate), make for very active catalysts for the allylic substitution reaction (quantitative conversion even at -20°C).
