Abstract:

The fragmentation behaviours of different Tetraalkylphosphonium halogenides (monoquaternary phosphonium salts), α,ω-bis(trialkylphosphonium)-dihalogenides (diquaternary phosphonium salts) und α,ω-bis(trialkylammonium)-dihalogenides (diquaternary ammonium salts) were studied. The structural identity of the fragment ions and the responsible fragmentation mechanisms were determined with the help of isotopomers. The electrospray-ionisation technique coupled to a quadrupol ion-trap was shown as the adequate instrumentation for this purpose. Electrospray-ionisation of monoquaternary salts transfers the Cation, electrospray-ionisation of diquaternary salts transfers the dication and the saltcation into the gas-phase. The fragmentation behaviour of all generated Ions were studied and determinated. The predominant fragmentation mechanisms of the ammonium- and phosphonium cations and dications are the charge remote fragmentation (CSR), the mixed site fragmentation (MSF), the alkan- and alken-elimination, as well as the homolytical cleavage in neighbourhood to the heteroatom . In contrast the fragmentation reactions of the saltcations are determinated by the presence of the anion. This results in the formation of a phosphorous-ylide in the collision-induced dissociation spectra of diquaternary phosphonium salts. It is the first reported case of direct detection of a phosphorous-ylide in the gas-phase. This phosphorous-ylide shows an extraordinary reactivity in the gas phase, which results in an intra- and intermolecular H/D-exchange of deuterated isotopomers in α-position to the phosphorous atom. The reactivity of the phosphorous-ylide allows the realization of a new kind of ion/molecule reaction with electrophiles inside the quadrupol ion-trap. A reaction between the phosphorous-ylide and deuteriumoxide, carbondioxide, acetaldehyde and propanal was realised inside the quadrupol ion-trap.
