Abstract:

Near- and supercritical water is suitable for the dehydration of polyols because of its physical and chemical properties. In this work the conversion of 2,3-butanediol, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol and 1,2,4-butanetriol under such conditions is investigated. The experiments were conducted in a continuous high pressure reactor at temperatures between 300 and 400 °C and pressures between 20 and 40 MPa. By using different additives (transition metal sulfate, -nitrate, -acetate and phosphoric acid) conversion and selectivity can be controlled and optimized. The results of the kinetic investigation for the dehydration of 2,3-butanediol and the modeling of the reaction network are discussed. From the modeling it can be concluded, that the positive effect of zinc sulfate on conversion and selectivity arises from a shift of the pH-value.
