Abstract:

The current decrease in the world's natural resources and the increasing demand for energy worldwide are reasons we should think about the enforced use of renewable energies and ways to support their application in the future. The continuing trend since the 1970s for the price of PV to fall by an order of magnitude in dollars and the simultaneous exponential growth of shipments in industry is evidence of the direction of an ever-increasing usefulness of photovoltaics. The basic premise of this study is the examination of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) in the form of 13 projects (case studies), in a specific climatic region of 55° N to 47° N, with the help of newly- defined evaluation criteria (so-called "Toughness" criteria) for BIPV. These criteria show the connection between the esthetic aspects and technically sensitive factors which influence electrical output. This also includes an "objective" scale of comparison, which reflects the different climatic conditions of each project, as well as the inclination of the integrated pv modules and their division into roof and facade integration. The "toughness" criteria form the basis for an objective comparison of the projects, with a detailed breakdown into the individual factors which lead to each of the electrical outputs -this represents the maximum hourly load of a PV system. An examination is made of the technical factors, in combination with those influenced by architectural design, as well as considerations of location. The results are shown in bar diagrams to make a graphical comparison possible in a general sense and are also enlarged to complete the graphs A and B (results of the poject analyses are shown in various graphics). Following a discussion of the "Toughness"-criteria and a short description of each of the project results are calculations of the Performance Ratio (PR) for each project. Comparisons are made between the possible projects, independent of location. The factors influencing the PR are illustrated in the graphs, e.g., meteorological influences (shade, temperature, etc.), solar cells and modules (efficiencies and losses), converters and other operational elements (efficiencies and losses). Finally, an evaluation of each project is made. The PRhoriz is used only for comparison purposes with the PR in the study in order to show the influence of the inclination of the PV modules and their orientation towards the south. A short summary of the most important key dates of each project is included under each graphic along with those characteristics which lead to the PR values. The summary then explains the combination of the various factors which have an influence on the electrical outcome reached by the system as well as the influence on the Performance Ratio of the systems.Information on the influential factors can be extracted from the charts and graphs, which then can be used in a general sense and to form the basis for the application of PV in the GIPV sector. As a result, in the long term, there could be an increased use of PV. The resulting outcomes make it possible to achieve more objective results from this project analysis. As well, the architects could use PV integration in an earlier stage in their overall planned projects. The fact that PV will be used in the future at an increased level might also have an influence on the price of PV and therefore support the increased application of this technology in the future. The combination of the fields of architecture, research and industry might lead in the future to the development of integration methods for PV, or new products (and new materials) and open up new markets and new fields for architects. This might include new opportunities for specialisation in the form of interdisciplinary collaboration among research, architecture and industry. On this basis it might be possible to think in the future about new directions for the field of architecture. In the long term, these results could help foster future cooperation in the fields of research, industry and architecture as a common and connecting element in the future of GIPV. In combination with future and ongoing research in the field of new PV technologies (to increase efficiencies and decrease costs), a very successful and positive future for Photovoltaic and BIPV technology may be expected.
