Abstract:

I have studied two identical low dimensional chaotic oscillators, which are mutually coupled via time delayed components. I investigate experimentally as well as numerically and analytically the effects of complete mutual synchronisation and auto-synchronisation occuring in such a configuration. For my experiment I choose electronic autonomous diode oscillators with a main frequency in the kHz regime. Each of them can be modelled with very high accuracy by a three-dimensional ordinary differential equation. Thus, the aim of my work is to extract generic features for the given setup in order to derive an explanation for the observed synchronisation patterns. At first, I show general coupling schemes for which complete synchronisation exists. I distinguish between invasive and non-invasive components of the coupling. The parameters of the non-invasive coupling can be varied in order to study the mechanisms of stabilisation, which for the given setup is a non-trivial problem. My analytical investigation then refers to a stability analysis following time-delayed feedback control of periodic orbits. I show that this concept can also be applied to chaotic synchronisation. Further I derive a stochastic model that relies on the time evolution of Lyapunov-vectors. The model explains the detailed mechanism of stabilisation and gives an approximation of the characteristic exponents. In the last part I investigate a technique using pulsed coupling to improve the performance of anticipating synchronisation.
