Abstract:

Due to the finite nature and instability of fossil resource supply the change from petrochemistry to a chemistry based on renewable resources is ultimately inevitable. One of the main tasks regarding the change of feedstock is the generation and optimization of new product trees. The access to aliphatic compounds based on renewable resources is already assured, even though there is still much need for optimization of reactions and product trees. However, the access to aromatic – especially phenylic – compounds is still not warranted satisfactorily. Hence, during the course of this work a strategy for the synthesis of bifunctional phenylic monomers based on 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was elaborated. The Diels-Alder-Reaction of HMF-derivatives with appropriate dienophiles and the bridge cleavage of the resulting endoxides followed by in situ aromatisation form the backbone of the strategy. Both, the variation of dienophiles and HMF-based dienes as well as the derivatisation of the resulting phenylic building blocks guarantee the flexibility of the synthetic route and are the reason for the accessibility of a broad variety of monomer structures and polyreactions. All four different reaction steps where thoroughly investigated and optimized during the course of this study. The derivatisation of HMF in the first step of the synthesis as well as the derivatisation of the resulting phenylic compounds in the fourth and last step proofed to be feasible and well optimisable. Furthermore investigations regarding the second step of the reaction series were able to show, that the electronically normal Diels-Alder-Reaction of HMF-derivatives with adequate dienophiles furnishes different endoxides in high yields. Finally the third step proofed to be the most critical of the elaborated reaction series. The bridge cleavage reaction and the in situ aromatisation have to be devised individually for every endoxide. Predominantly this has to be done in an empirical way, even though it could be shown that there could be made some predictions regarding the feasibility of the base catalyzed bridge cleavage with the aid of DFT-calculations. The main problems of this reaction step where traced back to the combination of retro Diels-Alder-Reaction and the low stability of HMF-derivatives in strong acidic or basic media. Altogether the good feasibility of the elaborated reaction sequence could be proven during this thesis. Starting from fructose bifunctional phenylic monomers can be generated in only four to six reaction steps. Moreover the strategy of synthesis proofed to be general and is principally able to address many different kinds of monomeric structures and polyreactions.
