Abstract:

The automation of processes within construction projects has significant potential for improvement. Of substantial importance in this context is an increase or rather maintenance of high efficiency especially in the processes of planning and execution. Since many of the construction processes currently in use already have a high degree of digitalization and consequently a high degree of automation, the question arises as to where a change is necessary in order to improve the efficiency that currently prevails in the other areas of the construction industry. In conducting empirical research, the need for automation of processes performed by people within construction projects emerged. For this reason, the central goal of this doctoral thesis was to develop a control option within construction project controlling that would lead to an acceleration of the process speed dictated by people. This was achieved in the form of a new system of control loops. In the process, the latencies within individual controlling mechanisms were significantly reduced. Progress has been made towards the approximation of a holistic virtual representation of the complex socio-economic-technical system “construction”. The aforementioned acceleration was made possible by linking individual, previously manually executed processes with newly generated automated processes as well as the connection and expansion of interfaces in both construction procedures and software. Furthermore, an increase of the degree of automation could be achieved by a “quasi-continuous” and self-regulating data update of a control process with means that are currently available on the market and therefore close current practice. Altogether, the doctoral thesis contributes to solving the efficiency problems as well as to the increase of the process automation within the construction project controlling. Thereby, the construction and project managers as well as the other members of the project team are given the opportunity to increase efficiency within their daily work. This will in turn improve their work and make the construction industry more attractive for employees again.
