Abstract:

Since Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen presented their famous Gedankenexperiment in 1935 - also known as the EPR-paradox - the structure of locality and causality in quantum theory has been heavily discussed among the physics community. For a long time the debate had been of rather philosophical nature until Bell’s theorem offered a way to an experimental approach. Until today all of the conducted experiments suffered from practical imperfections known as loopholes. An innovative Bell-experiment based on spin-entangled pairs of 199Hg atoms can close these loopholes and give a final answer to EPR. This PhD thesis describes the design, construction and characterization of a highly sensitive detector system for mercury atoms which represents an important part of this Bell-experiment. It is based on a resonant two-step ionization process ending in an autoionizing state. A Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier capable of generating 5.5 ns gaussian shaped pulses with energies of about 2.4 mJ at 761 nm and 3.8 mJ at 789 nm is used as a source of the two ionization wavelengths. Via efficient single pass frequency conversion processes energies of about 580 µJ and 180 µJ at the required wavelengths 253.7 nm and 197.2 nm could be reached. These were used to examine the ionization process of mercury vapour in an UHV chamber. The detector consists of a system of electrostatical optics and channel electron multipliers. Detection efficiencies of 0.897 were reached by optimization of the detector geometry and the kinetic energies of the particles. This fulfills the requirements of the Bell experiment.
