Abstract:

Ultra high molar mass polyolefins (UHMPO) have a high mechanical strength combined with a low specific weight. Because of the excellent properties and the low price UHMPO materials are increasingly used as high performance materials. So far, an analysis of these plastics was extremely problematic. There are many problems in regular chromatographic characterization e.g. by SEC. The problems are caused by the extreme molecular size and the presence of chain branching. The molecules are usually destroyed during analysis or they show unwanted interactions with the stationary phase, which prevents a correct determination of the molar mass and the chain branching. In this work, a new characterization method is presented. The so-called Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation (AF4) allows an accurate characterization of UHMPO materials for the first time. In addition, the AF4 offers numerous other advantages over traditional methods, such as a high selectivity to large molecules and particles, the freely adjustable separation strength, fast solvent exchange, short analysis times and an universal applicability for different materials and structures. In this work different polymer samples were separated according to their molecular size. The molar mass and chain branching were determined. The results of the AF4 have been compared with those from traditional analytical techniques. The correctness of the obtained results was confirmed using standard and reference materials. Numerous UHMPO-samples or highly branched Polyolefins were analyzed by AF4 and the advantage of the method was demonstrated.
