Abstract:

About one decade ago the asymmetric organocatalysis was rediscovered for the preparation of enantiopure substances. However, up to now there are only very few examples of the application of a helically chiral, polymeric superstructure in asymmetric organocatalysis. The aim of this work was to set up a polymeric organocatalyst based on polyisocyanates by exploitation of a tropos biaryl axis and to examine the chirality transfer of the helical polymer backbone to the tropos side chains. For this purpose a total of six different biaryl isocyanate monomers were produced and subsequently converted to sergeant and soldier copolymers with a centrally chiral isocyanate. The resultant polyisocyanates could further be functionalised to a polymeric phosphorus acid derivative. With this polymer the hydrogenation reaction of an imin was catalysed to an amine. Though a good reactivity was reached, nevertheless, no chiral induction could be achieved. Furthermore the optical properties of the different polyisocyanates were examined by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Besides, an unexpected interaction appeared between the polymer backbone and the biaryl side groups. At high concentrations of biaryl monomers in the polymers the tropos biaryl axes determine the screw sense of the polymer main chain. This effect is depending on the temperature and the solvent used. Based on these results an explanation attempt was developed for the interaction of the (tropos) biaryl side group and the polymer head chain.
