Abstract:

It is investigated, if and how we can use the Fock exchange instead of the usual local exchange in the augmented spherical waves (ASW) program which is based on the Kohn-Sham formalism. In this way we want to obtain a density functional program which calculates optical band gap values which are closer to experimental values than those from the usual density functional approach or from Hartree-Fock calculations. We use as exchange-correlation energy functional the exact Fock exchange energy functional and neglect correlation effects. This ensures that the electron self-interaction contained in the Coulomb energy functional is exactly cancelled. We investigate how the so-called exact exchange potential corresponding to the Fock exchange energy functional can be calculated; this is the functional derivative of the exchange energy with respect to the electron density. We use the formula obtained in the very promising approximation of Krieger, Li, and Iafrate (KLI) and we also derive a further formula by repeatedly applying the chain rule for functional derivatives and by using some plausible approximations; the latter formula turns out to be identical with the exact Slater exchange potential. Both the KLI and the exact Slater formulas are transferred to a program for atomic calculations and to the ASW program and are implemented. The results of calculations with both these formalisms are compared with each other and with the literature. The KLI results are found to be in good agreement with the literature. The exact exchange potentials in KLI and Slater formalism show a similar behavior and both of them exhibit the correct asymptotic -1/r behavior for large radii. The values for the optical band gaps calculated with the ASW program using KLI or Slater formalism are about 75% of the experimental values whereas those obtained within the local density approximation (LDA) reach only about 55%. However, the dispersion of the occupied bands is smaller than in LDA.
