Abstract:

This thesis explores ion-specific effects in aqueous electrolyte solutions and aqueous polymer solutions. In particular, it describes the role of the cation, the role of mixtures of two anions, and how this influences polymer solubility. The results extend the current understanding of the so-called Hofmeister series. In experiments, polymer–salt solutions containing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) show intriguing trends of their phase transition temperature. This concerns various iodide, chloride, and mixtures of sodium salt solutions. Based on molecular dynamics simulations, this work proposes molecular-level mechanisms that explain these observations. Particularly, the role of ion–counterion interactions (ion pairing), in combination with polymer–ion interactions are identified as crucial for the underlying mechanisms. Not only the types of cation or anion (weakly or strongly hydrated) affect ion interactions, but their specific combination must be considered.
