Abstract:

The presented work addresses the problem of DAB converters regarding hard turn-on losses at partial load condition, especially when operated at high voltage transfer ratios. In order to increase efficiency in this operating range, two concepts are presented.

The hardware-oriented approach explores possibilities of variable inductance by placing small ferrite blocks into the air gap of the series inductor. Hence, a non-linear behavior is enforced. A demonstrator shows the efficiency benefits of this approach in the partial load range and the disadvantageous effect at full load condition. Furthermore, the additional dissipated heat of the saturating ferrite blocks is identified as the critical spot and the non-linear behavior of the system as well as the changes in loss distribution of the system are analyzed using a loss simulation model.

The software-oriented approach uses special control schemes to statically decouple the output voltage and the zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition. The latter is approximated by the zero-crossing of the resonant inductor current. Initially, two decentralized linear controllers are designed. Concerning the non-linear system behavior in the complete operation range, an automated angle update with prior partial system identification is developed and found to be the better implementation for the static decoupling control task. Limitations of the available current measurement hinder the full verification using the developed demonstrator during the project period.
