Abstract:

Scope of this work was the synthesis of porous carbon materials from polyacrylonitrile-based core-shell particles. Porous carbon materials are an important reserch field in battery and supercapacitor technology as well as in catalysis. Core-shell particles with selectively adjustable size and definable core-shell ratio can be obtained by starved-feed emulsion polymerisation. This enables a pre-defined pore size for the final carbon material. During subsequent thermal processes, the polymeric core material is decomposed and a porous carbon structure can be obtained. Starting from the particles, two routes for the production of ordered porous carbons were used in this work. Firstly, opal films were prepared using the melt-shear organisation technique. The produced opal films are first stabilised under an oxidative atmosphere and then carbonised under inert atomsphere. The stabilisation has a strong effect on the optics of the opal films, which makes them interesting for optical and sensing applications. Secondly, the pure dried particles, which also form a highly ordered structure due to the drying process, are also stabilised under an oxidative atmosphere. Subsequently, carbonisation was carried out either under inert or activating ammonia atmosphere. The activating atmosphere should improve the specific surface area as well as the preservation of the nitrogen in the final porous carbon material.
