Abstract:

This thesis describes the development of a dilatometer which is capable to measure the time resolved reaction shrinkage and the time resolved coefficient of thermal expansion during curing of epoxy resins. At first a model system was characterized with current methods like infrared-spectroscopy, calorimetry, dynamic-mechanic analysis and microscopy. The model system consists of the components bisphenol A diglycidylether, hexahydrophthalic anhydride and 2-ethyl-4-methyl-imidazole. The investigations of the model system allow to deduce a physical model for the reaction shrinkage. The model is based on the kinetics of the system and allows to calculate the shrinkage as a function of the temperature profile of the reaction. Furthermore the reaction shrinkage is scaled with the conversion to examine different parameters which influence the reaction shrinkage. Parameters examined in this work are: chain length, functionality, size and state of aggregation of the components as well as filler content, particle shape and particle size of mineral fillers (talc, wollastonite, silica, calc) and polymer fillers (variably polysulfones with different functional groups). In addition, the demixing and impact strength of polysulfone filled systems are examined in dependence on the used polysulfone and its content.
