Abstract:

In the present work, the main objective was to introduce various highly fluorinated materials in polymerization for the preparation of different polymer architectures and functional coatings. Due to the variety of extraordinary properties, the class of fluoropolymers gained more and more attention in research in recent years and it is hard to imagine daily life without them as high performance materials. Focusing on the optical properties of fluoropolymers, core-shell particles can be prepared via starved-feed emulsion polymerization and opal films can be pressed from them via the melt-shear process, in which the fluoropolymer forms a stable matrix with high refractive index contrast to the core material. Furthermore, by removing the core materials, these opal films can also be inverted to form a fully porous material. Furthermore, by synthesizing particles with a soft core, a hard but stable intermediate layer, and a soft shell, as well as suitable crosslinking of the matrix-material, brilliant opal films can be produced that react reversibly to pressure with a color change. By further crosslinking, imprinted color images can be irreversibly fixed on the opal-film. In the second part of the work, a highly fluorinated coating material is prepared from a novel non-perfluorinated monomer (PPVE-mercaptoethanol acrylates), for application on textiles for water and also oil repellency. The application of the novel monomer has the advantage of atmospheric degradability compared to conventional perfluorinated materials. This degradability is studied by treatment with ozone, proving fragmentation of the polymer.
